In order to ensure efficient management of public facilities, the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello has advocated for establishment of a robust and sustainable maintenance mechanism in the civil service system.
Bello, who made this assertion yesterday, during the flag-off ceremony of the rehabilitation of the Federal Secretariat complex, phase 1, in Abuja, noted the need for a system where by some persons will be recruited to be in – charge of maintaining public buildings (facilities) than the constant use of contractors.
He noted that the secretariat was commissioned over 30 years ago, and needs to be renovated, to continue to serve the purpose it was built.
According to him, the procurement regarding maintenance has not been successful and calls for recruitment of staff on junior cadre to grow through the ranks to be managing the facilities.
He said the state of decay in the public facilities was worrisome and urgent steps should be taken to tackle the menace.
“Facilities management is an ideal and practicable if there are measures and policies put in place to ensure that. If not, it will not bring the desired results”, he stressed
In her remarks, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Folasade Yemi-Esan, said the secretariat needs to be renovated to spur staff to good work.
She explained that funding has been the challenge but with full support of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), the project will be completed.
