In a bid to promoting peace and security in the country, an Islamic forum yesterday counseled Imams and scholars to desist from making unguarded utterances that could fuel violence and security breach. Dr. Ahmad Bello Dogarawa, of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna
state, disclosed this yesterday at the opening of a two-day capacity building workshop for Imams and Islamic Scholars by the Muslim Community Centre (MCC) in Abuja.
While presenting a paper, with a theme: “The role of Islamic Scholars in the promotion of peace and security”, Dr. Ahmad said Muslims have been enjoined to convene such, so as to remind the scholars of their responsibility to humanity.
“One of the beauties of Islam is that its teachings are applicable to times irrespective of happenings, location and the people; the roles of the scholars as well as the need to always remind them in peace building are enshrined in the Holy Qur’an,” he said.
He stated further that during the event, “We also probed them to remind the on people on the importance of five basic necessities as contained in the Holy Qur’an, which is protection of lives and property, religion, wealth, intellect and protection of one’s honour and dignity.”
Also speaking, Coordinator of the workshop and member of the MCC, Dr. Muhammad Gambo, said the non-governmental organization was poised to instituting programmes that are aimed at promoting societal peace and security.
Speaking on behalf of participants, a scholar from Kano state, Umar Yusi Paki, lauded all those who presented papers at the forum and described the event as “timely”.
