The National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) has distributed date palm seedlings to Babar Gona community in Daura Emirate Council, Katsina State as part of its efforts to empower residents and tackle the spread of desertification in the region.

The Director General/CEO Saleh Abubakar,during the handing over ceremony explained that there are many ways people can be empowered, and urged the residents to take ownership of the seedlings and other interventions provided for their benefit.
Abubakar further announced that Agency would mount a borehole in the community to serve domestic purposes, support farming activities, and provide water for livestock.
He sought the community’s support and cooperation to ensure the success of the project, stressing that the initiative was designed to outlive the present generation and continue to benefit those to come.
The DG added that the initiative was aimed at combating the encroachment of the Sahara Desert, which has been threatening homes, farmlands, food production, and animal feed across Katsina State and its surrounding areas.
In his remarks, the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farouk Umar CON, represented by Alhaji Salisu Sani, Wazirin Danmadamin Daura, District Head of Dimurkul, expressed appreciation to NAGGW for the gesture, saying it would go a long way in bettering the lives of the people and improving their farms.
He said the community is grateful for the support and appealed for more assistance, especially in the areas of water supply and manpower to sustain the project.
According to him, while the people have the manpower to nurture the plants, they require additional support such as watering systems and farm inputs to ensure the success of the initiative.
