The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish Nigeria’s first specialised Master of Business Administration in Hajj Operations Management, in a move aimed at professionalising pilgrimage administration across the country.
The agreement, signed on Friday at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, is expected to replace largely ad hoc operational practices with structured academic training and industry-based expertise for Hajj and Umrah management.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NAHCON, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, said the increasing complexity of Hajj operations requires professionals with specialised knowledge in logistics, technology, policy implementation, pilgrim welfare and international coordination.
He said, “Hajj operations have become increasingly sophisticated. This programme will produce professionals equipped with both academic knowledge and practical field experience to improve planning, coordination and service delivery for Nigerian pilgrims.”
The NAHCON chairman signed the agreement alongside the Commission’s Secretary, Dr Mustapha Muhammad Ali, while the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, and the institution’s Registrar, Malam Rabiu Samaila, signed on behalf of the university.
Ahmed described the initiative as the outcome of nearly a decade of consultations between both institutions.
According to him, the programme bridges the gap between academic excellence and industry practice while equipping graduates with the managerial skills needed to meet the changing demands of Hajj and Umrah administration in Nigeria and beyond.
The MBA will be jointly run by the Hajj Institute of Nigeria and the ABU Distance Learning Centre, allowing participants across the country to study through flexible learning arrangements.
The programme is targeted at officials of NAHCON, State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards and Commissions, licensed Hajj and Umrah tour operators, professionals in the travel, tourism and hospitality sectors, religious scholars, entrepreneurs and graduates seeking careers in pilgrimage management.
The ABU delegation included the Director of the Distance Learning Centre, Prof Mohammed Bashir Mu’azu; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Advancement, Research and Innovation), Prof Sanusi Aliyu Rafindadi; Director of the CBN Centre for Economics and Finance, Prof Auwalu Haruna; and other senior academics.
NAHCON’s delegation comprised the Rector of the Hajj Institute of Nigeria, Prof Nasiru Maiturare, directors and other members of the commission’s senior management.
Stakeholders said the initiative aligns with ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s Hajj administration aimed at improving efficiency, accountability and service delivery while creating a sustainable pool of professionally trained personnel for the country’s pilgrimage sector.
Admission requirements, application procedures and the commencement date for the programme are expected to be announced by Ahmadu Bello University in the coming weeks.
