NANS protest 11-month old ASUP strike, calls for Wike’s removal

The National Association of Nigeria students (NANS), South-West, Zone D, protested underfunding and crises in the education sector at Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota Lagos yesterday.

NANS staged a peaceful mass protest to make known their grievances as regards the ongoing academic staff union of polytechnic (ASUP) strike, calling on the federal government to intervene as a matter of urgency.

Blocking the entrance of Governor Babatunde Fashola’s office, the students said they are tired of staying at home, promising to mobilize all students nationwide and shut down all federal roads.

NANS also condemned the age long discrimination of polytechnic graduates who, have continued to suffer in the labour market against their university counterparts, calling on government to review the issue.

A student from Ilaro polytechnic, Idowu Gbemileke said they had spent 11 months and two weeks at home doing nothing while the federal government had kept mum on the strike so far.

Questioning Nyesom Wike’s ability to function effectively as the supervising minister of Education, the Nigerian students called for his immediate removal as a minister and urged for a reform in the education sector.

“The student’s demands include a reduction in LASU’s school fees, reinstatement of all banned unions by the management of university of Lagos (UNILAG); conversion of Higher National Diploma (HND) to Bachelor of technology (B.Tech) and immediate removal of the minister of education.
