The Labour Party, (LP), has intensified preparations for the 2027 general elections in Nasarawa State after clearing a number of aspirants to participate in its forthcoming primaries for governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly positions.
The clearance exercise, conducted by the party’s National Screening Committee, signals the formal commencement of internal political contests within the LP as parties continue to position themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.
According to the committee’s report dated May 23, 2026, all aspirants who appeared before the panel were screened in line with the Labour Party constitution, electoral guidelines and rules governing the 2026 primary elections.
Among the prominent figures cleared is former Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, who will contest for the Nasarawa South Senatorial ticket, while Gaza Jonathan Gbefwi was cleared for the governorship race.
The committee stated that aspirants were evaluated based on legal and democratic requirements guiding the party’s nomination process and were found qualified to participate in the primaries.
Also cleared for the House of Representatives primaries are Dr Emmanuel Akolo, Jesse James Ayang and Blanzon Adaamu Bako.
For the Nasarawa State House of Assembly elections, the committee approved thirteen aspirants, including Asilika Essla, Mohammed Ibrahim, Hon. Ashy David Maiyaki, Alexander Abashi Dauda, Gown Shedrack Awayima, Bala Umaru, Zamani Iliya Helima, Barr. Labani Emmanuel Nnengon, Madoki Margaret, Iyimoga Osoweshi Daniel, Jacob Omaku Attah and Ipah Jonathan Afagher.
The screening committee commended aspirants for what it described as their cooperation and orderly conduct during the exercise, expressing optimism that the forthcoming primaries would be peaceful and transparent.
The report was signed by the committee chairman, Nenadi Usman, and secretary, Hon. Iheanacho Obioma.
