A former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has formally entered the 2027 governorship race in Kebbi State after emerging as the candidate of the African Democratic Congress, (ADC).
Malami’s emergence marks a major political move in Kebbi ahead of the next general elections, setting the stage for what could become one of the state’s most closely watched governorship contests.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by Mohammed Bello Doka, Malami’s Special Assistant on Media, who said the endorsement followed consultations with party leaders, stakeholders and supporters across the state.
In his reaction, Malami thanked the party leadership and supporters for what he described as their confidence in his candidacy ahead of the 2027 polls.
“I sincerely appreciate the confidence and support shown by leaders, stakeholders, and supporters of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, in Kebbi State ahead of the 2027 general elections,” he stated.
The ADC also unveiled other candidates for key positions, including retired Major General Aminu Bande for Kebbi Central Senatorial District, retired Deputy Comptroller General Ibrahim Muhammad Mera for Kebbi North Senatorial District and Garba Danjuma Limi for Kebbi South Senatorial District.
According to the statement, the party intends to campaign on issues of governance, justice, security and development as it seeks to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state.
Political observers believe Malami’s entry into the race could reshape the political dynamics in Kebbi, given his national profile and longstanding influence within northern politics.
He is expected to face incumbent Governor Nasir Idris of the APC in the 2027 governorship election.
