Nasarawa United Beat Abia Warriors In Umuahia, Reignite Continental Ambition

The Solid Miners, on Sunday evening, defied the odds to mount a breathtaking comeback from a first-half goal deficit to secure a resounding 2-1 away win against Abia Warriors at the Umuahia Township Stadium, Abia State.
Chukwuemeka Obioma had put the hosts in the lead, two minutes before the break, before goals from substitute, Habibu Alakija who replaced injured John Joshua, and Jofrank Istifanus in the 47th and 55th minutes and a heroic goalkeeping by Darlintin Ovunda which earned him the Man-of-the-Match award, turned around the tide in United’s favour, sparking jubilant scenes among the visiting side’s players and officials as the Solid Miners did the double against their opponents’ stiff resistance to claim the maximum points in the game also watched by the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, who was accompanied to the match venue by the Chief Whip of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Hon. Larry Ven-Bawa, and Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State on Sports Affairs, Comrade Hamza Ibrahim Moyi.
The masterful turnaround in Umuahia propelled Nasarawa United to a lofty second position on the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League table with 38 points, after 22 games, dislodging Abia Warriors to 3rd position with a point more, but three points behind table-topping Rivers United who have 41 points from 21 games.
While it is the first league win for the Solid Miners against Abia Warriors at their home ground, today’s victory reawoke the Lafia-based side’s title and continental-chasing ambitions with sixteen more matches left to play before the current season comes to an end.
Up next for the Solid Miners is a home game against another Abia State-based Club, Enyimba, during the midweek, 28th January, 2026, before travelling to Bauchi for a date with Wikki Tourists, on Sunday, 1st February, 2026.
