Nassarawa state assembly propose stiffer penalties on land grabbers

The Nasarawa State House of assembly is proposing laws that will forestall or restrict encroachment, protect and reprimand all category of offenders in matters that relate to government properties.
To this end, the House yesterday conducted a public hearing on a bill for an act to prohibit forceful entry and illegal occupation of landed properties, violent and fraudulent conduct in relation to landed properties in the state.
Declaring the public hearing open at the state Assembly chamber, Chairman House committee on lands, Hon. Hashimu Jibrin Gurku said the bill was sponsored by Hon. Daniel Ogazi and was unanimously adopted by the members and was subsequently subjected to necessary rudiment of legislation to enable it conform to the nifty gritty of law making.
According to Hashimu “we were mandated by the House to conduct a public hearing in order to get the inputs of the stakeholders, larger society, professionals, technocrats, and other experience assets managers.
Adding that the exercise was part of the constitutional requirement as enshrined in section 36 of the 1999 constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria as amended. “as lawmakers, we must comply with this constitutional requirement. This event today should be seen as an opportunity to put our names in gold with objective observations, criticism, analysis and recommendations”.
The lawmaker further lamented that individuals, private organization and
all manner of persons have taken over government properties, adding that some are occupying green areas in the state which according to him has assumed dangerous dimension and must be stopped.
