NECO non-academic staff deny involvement in strike

Date:

From Yakubu Mustapha, Minna

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and Associated Institutions (NASU), National Examination Council (NECO) chapter, has refuted the news of an alleged plan to embark on strike action.

The NASU NECO branch chairman, Abdulrasheed Rabana, who stated this during a press briefing at IBB Pen House, Minna, the state capital, said that “the legitimate platform constitutionally empowered to declare strike in any organization is the union. We categorically refute the news, as it is false.”

He stated that without doubt, the union has issues bordering on welfare and other legitimate entitlements of staff with management, but that it has not exhausted all avenues related to dialogue in resolving the issues at stake.

“Strike is always the last resort in matters of collective bargaining between management and union. At this stage, we consider such action as inimical to the organisation and by extension, to the Nigerian child currently writing NECO’s SSCE exams.”

Rabana appealed to members of NECO on the ongoing SSCE exercise to remain focused and committed in the discharge of the national assignment.

He also appealed to the councils’ board chairman, Dr. Paddy Njoku and the Registrar, Prof. Promise Nwachukwu Okpala to intensify efforts to reach speedy and amicable resolution of contentious matters with NASU on all issues affecting welfare and career progress of staff for peace and industrial harmony in NECO.
