NFF congress: Gaiya calls for transparent process

Ahead of this weekend emergency congress of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) at Warri, Delta state, chairman of the House of Representatives committee on sports, Godfrey Gaiya has called for the statutes of the NFF to be followed to the letter if they are to avoid the developments of the now famous August 26.

Gaiya, who committee has had public hearings for the two key factions in the NFF crises (the Maigari and Giwa factions), said that all laws governing football must be followed for there to be a credible process.

“The rules of the game must be respected this time, the NFF statutes have to be followed to the letter so as to avoid more crises. We felt that the statutes and laws were disrespected somewhere along the line and hence the crises we had,” he said.

A letter from FIFA dated September 3, had instructed for Aminu Maigari to return and preside over an emergency congress ‘in the shortest possible time’ to draw a roadmap for elections into the board of the NFF.

The letter also asked for Chris Giwa to ‘stop parading himself as President of the NFF’, and with Giwa already seemingly stepping down, Gaiya has called for a process that would give equal opportunities to everyone.

“Our appeal is for people to respect the laws we have set for ourselves, we shouldn’t have double standards on the same law,” added Gaiya.
