NFF Crisis: Fanny Amun resigns as chairman of investigative committee

The crisis rocking the Nigeria football Federation (NFF) has taking a new turn as Mr Fanny Amun has resigned as chairman of the federation’s fact-finding committee after submitting the panel’s report

Amun announced that he had vacated the position after completing the committee’s assignment, saying he wanted to avoid any form of “compromise” by remaining in the role after the report had been submitted.

The committee was established by the NFF to investigate Nigeria’s recent setbacks in international football and make recommendations on how to improve the administration of the country’s national teams.

However, he resigned immediately after submitting the committee’s findings, insisting that he wanted the process and its conclusions to remain free from external influence.

“I didn’t want anyone to influence the report before I submitted it to the NFF. That was why I submitted it and resigned,” Amun said.

He revealed that he deliberately gave the committee a two-week timeframe, despite expecting to complete the assignment within a week, to ensure the process was not compromised.

“This was because I didn’t want anyone to influence the fact-finding committee’s decisions, so I decided to submit the report and resign,” he added.

“Moreover, I am not someone who will spend more than enough time in a position.”

The NFF inaugurated the six-member committee on 17 August, with Amun appointed chairman. Its mandate included investigating the causes of the recent poor performances of Nigeria’s national teams, with particular attention on the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the World Cup followed their quarter-final elimination at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and a subsequent 2-1 defeat by South Africa in the playoff for a place in the Inter-Confederations Playoffs.

Nigeria will consequently miss the Women’s World Cup for the first time since the tournament began in 1991.

Amun was joined on the committee by former Nigeria U-20 coach Ladan Bosso, former Super Falcons captain Desire Oparanozie, former Super Eagles captain Mutiu Adepoju and former FIFA referee Dr Alex Mana. Nasiru Sa’idu served as secretary.
