In what was an intriguing and dramatic end to the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season in Minna, Niger Tornadoes survived a late scare to secure their top-flight status, thanks to a decisive penalty goal from one of the club’s leading scorers, Abdulrasheed Shehu Dabai, after a keenly contested encounter against Shooting Stars, who were chasing a continental ticket.
The stadium was filled to capacity, while the weather remained calm following heavy rainfall earlier in the day. With contrasting ambitions at stake, Niger Tornadoes battling to avoid relegation and the visitors aiming for a continental slot, the game lived up to expectations from kickoff.
The encounter started at an electrifying pace, with Tornadoes dominating much of the first-half proceedings, Isaac Jerry was barely called into action as the Ikon Allah Boys maintained sustained pressure on the visitors.
The breakthrough eventually came in the 41st minute when a Shooting Stars defender handled the ball inside the penalty area, leaving the referee with no option but to point to the spot. Abdulrasheed Shehu Dabai calmly converted the penalty to give Niger Tornadoes a deserved lead before the break.
The second half saw Tornadoes create more scoring opportunities but fail to extend their advantage. Despite the slim scoreline, the hosts held firm until the final whistle to secure a crucial victory and preserve their NPFL status.
Niger Tornadoes Technical Adviser, Majin Mohammed, who appeared highly emotional during his post-match interview, commended his players for their bravery and determination in securing the vital win. He also appreciated the fans and supporters for their unflinching support throughout the season.
Majin expressed satisfaction at guiding the team to safety despite what he described as a turbulent campaign, during which the team struggled for points both at home and away.
The result means Niger Tornadoes finished the season in 13th position on the NPFL table with 38 points, successfully retaining their top-flight status.
