The 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League season concluded in grand fashion on Sunday, with Rangers International crowned champions after a tense 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.
Despite a commanding 3-0 win for Rivers United against Katsina United, it was not enough to deny Rangers the title, as the Enugu side held on to finish the season as champions in a tightly contested finale that showcased the league’s growing competitiveness.
Top sports administrators, including National Sports Commission Director General Bukola Olopade, were in attendance and took centre stage as Rangers lifted the trophy in front of a vibrant Lagos crowd.
Speaking after the final whistle, Olopade showered praise on the leadership of the league, commending the steady progress made under NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye.
“I want to first of all congratulate Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, the Chairman of the League. It’s an amazing job they have done this season, just like they did last season and two years ago,” Olopade said. “There has been tremendous improvement. We keep moving from strength to strength, and today’s atmosphere was amazing. It’s something all Nigerians must be proud of.”
The NSC Director General extended his congratulations to all stakeholders involved in the thrilling title race, praising not only champions Rangers but also runners-up Rivers United and Ikorodu City for their performances across the campaign.
However, Olopade was firm in highlighting the next major step for Nigerian club football, commercial growth and stronger financial backing.
“In terms of structure, planning, and timing, we have moved on,” he noted. “What we need to work on now is to attract multiple mega sponsorships for the league. This league is ripe for multi billion-naira sponsorship, and that’s what we need to start working towards collectively.”
He stressed the importance of collaboration between the Nigeria Football Federation, the National Sports Commission, and the league board to elevate the NPFL to a more financially sustainable and globally competitive level.
The season finale capped another year of visible progress for the NPFL, with improved organisation, heightened fan engagement, and a tightly contested title race that went down to the final day.
For Rangers, the triumph adds another proud chapter to their history, while for the league, attention now shifts to building on its growing momentum.
