The Director General of National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency(NESREA)Professor Aliyu Jauro, said all has been set towards the full implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility Programme in the electronics sector.
He made this known following a meeting between officials of NESREA and E-waste Producers’ Responsibility Organisation of Nigeria(EPRON), recently to fine tune strategies for implementing the EPR in the sector .
Prof Jauro, explained that, it was agreed that, this all important move was in line with F.G’s set objectives to actualize the Private Public Partnership (PPP) mantra in driving the economy.
In his remarks, Prof. Jauro welcomed the development and assured of his support to EPRON, especially in areas of awareness creation, which he admitted was key to the overall success of the programme.
He expressed delight that progress was at last being made and that Nigeria would be better placed.
Consequently, the EPRON Chairman Dr Oladimeji Oresanya applauded the move, stating that “this was the dream of NESREA as well as the expectation of everybody. We can now tell the global community that Nigeria is ready and fully ready.”
The Extended Producer Responsibility Programme was put in place by NESREA as part of efforts to institute environmentally sound management of waste in the country by ensuring that producers take responsibility for the entire life cycle of their products.
Recently, Nigeria received grants from the Global Environmental Facility, GEF for the take-off of the “Project on Circular Economy Approaches in the Electronics Sector. The GEF project would support the activities of EPRON thereby pushing Nigeria into a zero- waste regime in the electronics sector.
