The Nigerian Government has expressed condolences to the government and people of Colombia following a devastating magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck the country on Monday, August 10, 2026.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, Nigeria described the earthquake as a tragedy and extended its sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives, as well as those injured and affected by the disaster.
The ministry said the powerful tremor, reported to be the strongest recorded in Colombia this century, caused significant loss of life and extensive damage to homes, hospitals, schools and critical infrastructure.
It said several regions were affected, including Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda and surrounding areas.
“ The Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria express profound sorrow and deepest sympathy to the Government and people of the Republic of Colombia,” the statement said.
Nigeria also wished the injured a swift and full recovery and expressed solidarity with the Colombian people during the period of national mourning and recovery.
The Federal Government expressed confidence in the resilience, unity and determination of Colombians, as well as the leadership of President Gustavo Petro, to confront the disaster.
It further expressed hope that Colombia would undertake a comprehensive search-and-rescue operation and begin the rebuilding process.
