Nigeria will surprise opponents at World Cup, says Uchebo

Date:

The Cercle Brugge striker, Michael Uchebo has said that the Super Eagles would surprise it opponents at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The former Enugu Rangers forward received his first call-up to the national team and earned his first cap on March 6 in the goalless draw with Mexico in a friendly match, playing the first half before being replaced.

“I’m very happy. I didn’t conceive the thought of making the 30-man list with the great number of Nigerian stars at home and abroad,” Uchebo told Goal.

“I didn’t imagine that I was going to be talking about a call-up to the team. My World Cup invitation was a surprise, but with a big desire. I think that I am in a great moment.

He said that the African champions have the human capacity to challenge any country in the world and would not be intimidated by their credentials or group of stars.

“Well, as you know it’s the World Cup and every country that has qualified for the [it] harbours the dream of winning the tournament. No one should write off Nigeria as we have the talents and quality to succeed at the international level.

“My teammates and I are not afraid of any country either small or mighty because with our wealth of experience as players and exposure of our technical crew we will surprise the world in Brazil. All we need is to play as a unit and take to the coaches’ instructions,” he concluded.

The 24-year-old reserved his comments over his future at the Belgian Pro League club as his two-year contract with the side is expected to expire on May 29, 2014.

“I don’t want to talk about my club career for now my focus is on helping the Super Eagles succeed at the World Cup if I make the final 23-man squad,” he said.
