Media practitioners in Niger State have been tasked to make use of solution journalism approach in reporting critical issues affecting the society.
Head, Department of Mass Communication and Deputy Dean faculty of Languages Studies Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai, Doctor Ternenge Ende made the call during the 2023 press week organised by Nigeria Union of Journalist Niger State council.
Doctor Ende who is the guest lecturer, spoke on using solutions journalism to report salient issues without making things worse.
He opined that journalists could also report on society’s issues via the solutions lens to change the perspectives of media audiences who view the mainstream media reportage as one filled with negative and bad news.
While discussing the pillars of solution journalism response, evidence, insights and limitations he called on practitioners and educators to envision a society where journalism also serves as a guide-dog and not just as a watch-dog in its bid to change the society for the better.
The Chairman, Niger state council of NUJ, Comrade Abu Nmadu said the theme solution journalism is apt at a time the state is setting agenda for a New Niger and with the proliferation of fake news in the society hence the need for strict adherence to the professional ethics in carrying out their duties.
