Nigerian onion exporters and marketers have suspended shipments and trading activities to Ghana indefinitely over unresolved challenges affecting their operations in the country.
The President of the Onion Producers and Marketers Association, Alhaji Aliyu Mai Tasamu, announced the decision on Saturday in Sokoto, urging the Nigerian and Ghanaian governments to urgently resolve the dispute.
Mai Tasamu said the suspension would remain in place until both countries reach an amicable agreement on the conditions governing onion trade.
> “We have suspended onion export and trading activities to Ghana indefinitely until an amicable agreement is reached between Nigeria and Ghana on the onion trade,” he said.
He stressed that the action was not intended to undermine regional trade but to draw attention to the difficulties faced by Nigerian farmers, exporters and traders in the Ghanaian market.
Mai Tasamu called on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to intervene and mediate between the two countries, warning that prolonged restrictions could cause significant losses across the onion value chain.
He also urged authorities to establish clear and predictable trade rules to protect farmers, exporters, transporters and other businesses dependent on cross-border agricultural trade.
According to him, a lasting resolution would restore onion shipments, protect livelihoods and strengthen confidence in agricultural trade between Nigeria and Ghana.
He appealed to all parties to prioritise dialogue and ensure that the dispute does not escalate into a broader trade crisis in the region.
