Nigerian Foreign Minister, Amb. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned his ministerial position to pursue his gubernatorial ambition in Bauchi State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This was confirmed by the Spokesperson of the Ministry, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa on Monday who dismissed earlier speculation. According to Ebienfa, “The resignation of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs is confirmed” he wrote on Media Platform.

Tuggar’s resignation was not unconnected to the directive handed down to all appointees by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, instructing all political appointees seeking elective office to step down on or before March 31, 2026.

The directive which was communicated through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has triggered a wave of expected resignations within the cabinet.

Recall that Tuggar was appointed in August 2023. He took over from Geoffrey Onyeama, who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari for eight years.

Tuggar had represented Gamawa Federal Constituency of Bauchi in the House of Representatives between 2007 and 2011 and later served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany from 2017 to 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Before now, speculations were rife that Tuggar will be contesting for Bauchi governorship election in 2027.
