The National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC) has revamped its curriculum to enhance the education landscape for adult learners.
Prof. Akpama Simon, NMEC’s Executive Secretary, announced this development at the review of the Post Literacy Curriculum for Adults and Non-Formal Education Programmes in Nasarawa.
He said the updated curriculum aimed to create a more inclusive, flexible, and relevant educational framework, addressing the diverse needs of adult learners.
“Literacy is recognised as a fundamental human right, essential for personal empowerment, social and economic development.
“This initiative contributes to national development goals and supports the Sustainable Development Agenda’s Goal 4, promoting inclusive and equitable quality education for all.
“In spite of progress in reducing illiteracy rates and increasing accessibility, millions of Nigerian adults still lack basic literacy skills.
”This curriculum review is a pivotal step in addressing these challenges,” he said.
The executive secretary maintained that the review of the curriculum would address the practical needs of adult learners as it would focus on topics like financial literacy, digital skills, health awareness, and civic responsibilities.
He added that the curriculum would also ensure that learners gain skills they could immediately apply to their daily lives.
”Given the diversity of our learners, our curriculum must be adaptable to various learning environments, including those who may study part-time or in remote areas.
”We aim to develop a curriculum that accommodates learners of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds,’ he said.
He, therefore, explained that with this review, adult education would go beyond mere instruction but a way of equipping people with tools to lead better lives.
