The National Orientation Agency(NOA )has urged Nigerians to unite against insurgency and other security threats, saying the country’s diversity remains its greatest strength and should never be exploited by criminal elements seeking to divide the nation.
The agency made the call following the successful rescue of students and teachers abducted by suspected terrorists from schools in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State after a month-long intelligence-led security operation.
The Director-General of the NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, conveyed the message in a statement issued on Monday through the agency’s Deputy Director of Communication and Media, Paul Odenyi.
Issa-Onilu commended the gallantry, professionalism and unwavering commitment of the nation’s security agencies, describing the rescue as evidence of the success that could be achieved through coordinated action, effective intelligence gathering and strong inter-agency collaboration.
He praised the operation carried out in the dense forests of the Old Oyo National Park, where security operatives reportedly identified terrorist kingpins, disrupted their logistics networks, dismantled support structures and rescued all the victims without paying ransom.
According to him, the operation demonstrates that criminal groups cannot overcome a nation that acts with unity, determination and purpose.
“The responsibility of securing our nation does not rest with government and security agencies alone.
“Every Nigerian has a role to play. When citizens cooperate with security agencies, share credible information and reject narratives that divide us, we strengthen our collective ability to protect our communities and preserve our country.”
The NOA boss urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, promptly report suspicious activities and resist attempts to fuel ethnic, religious or political divisions capable of weakening the country’s resolve against insecurity.
He also paid tribute to security personnel who lost their lives or sustained injuries during the operation, describing their sacrifice as a reflection of the commitment and patriotism required to keep the country safe.
Issa-Onilu reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to promoting responsible citizenship, national values and civic consciousness through its grassroots network across the 774 local government areas.
He added that the NOA would continue to mobilise communities and encourage greater public participation in efforts to build a peaceful, united and secure Nigeria.
The Director-General urged Nigerians to take confidence from the recent successes recorded by security agencies, expressing optimism that sustained unity, resilience and collective action would help the country overcome threats to its peace and stability.
