North must rise above divisions – Bafarawa charges as Arewa cohesion initiative launches

Former Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, has called on Northern Nigerians to set aside their differences and take ownership of the region’s future.

According to him, the time has come for collective action toward peace, unity, and development.

Bafarawa made the call yesterday during the official unveiling of the Arewa Cohesion for Peace, Unity and Development Initiative at the Arewa House in Kaduna.

“The northern region can overcome its challenges through collective effort, unity of purpose, and a renewed commitment to inclusive development,” Bafarawa said.

He stressed that the Initiative is not about politics but about building a better future for all.

He noted that while the Initiative remains non-partisan, it will support anyone regardless of political affiliation who shares its core values and vision.

“We are not out to fight anybody but rather to build bridges and foster constructive engagement… Our mission transcends partisan politics,” he said.

Describing the current situation in the region as worrisome, Bafarawa painted a grim picture of widespread youth unemployment, insecurity, loss of values, and rising poverty.

He insisted that the North must move beyond complaints and begin to act.

“Let the world see a new narrative emerging from our region. One that tells of courage, resilience, and transformation. One that says: Yes, peace is possible. Yes, unity is achievable. And yes, development is within our reach.”

He added that peace was not just the absence of war but the presence of justice, equity and dialogue.

Bafarawa also outlined the key goals of the Arewa Cohesion Initiative, including promoting peaceful coexistence, creating dialogue platforms, engaging youth, and partnering with government and development agencies.

In his remarks, the Director-General of the Initiative, Dr. Abdullahi Idris, described the event as the beginning of a transformative journey based on the pillars of peacebuilding, unity, and sustainable development.
