Northern CAN demands thorough probe of terror financiers

The Northern Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the Federal Government to move beyond mere rhetoric and conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the sponsors and financiers of terrorism.
It urged Nigerian leaders to use the Christmas season as a pivotal moment for national renewal, justice, and lasting security.
The Northern CAN, in a Christmas message signed by its Chairman, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, and Secretary General, Bishop Mohammed Naga, insisted that true peace will remain unattainable unless those behind violent crimes are identified and held accountable.
It also emphasized that the country cannot continue to suffer under the weight of terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.
The association stated that Christmas, beyond its celebrations, provides Nigerians with “an opportunity for sober reflection on the moral conscience of the nation and the social direction of our country.”
“Christmas calls the nation to peace, justice, compassion, and respect for the sanctity of human life.
“It reminds us that a just and secure society is built on moral courage, compassion, and collective responsibility,” the statement added.
While acknowledging the hardships faced by many Nigerians, Northern CAN commended individuals, faith-based organizations, and community leaders who distributed palliatives and provided support to vulnerable citizens during the festive season, describing such gestures as a “reflection of enduring values of love and shared responsibility.”
The association however, praised the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their sacrifices in defending lives and property, but urged them to remain determined until insecurity is decisively addressed.
“The ongoing threats of terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping have inflicted immense pain on individuals, families, and communities, leaving scars that many may never fully recover from,” the Northern CAN lamented.
Furthermore, it welcomed the Federal Government’s recent designation of kidnappers, bandits, and violent criminal groups as terrorists, stating that this move “strengthens the national security framework and demonstrates a firm commitment to tackling insecurity with the seriousness it deserves.”
In a strong statement on justice, Northern CAN praised Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, for granting clemency to Sunday Jackson, a Christian farmer who had been sentenced to death following a violent attack on his farm.
The association deemed the original conviction a miscarriage of justice, noting that the governor’s intervention restored public confidence in fairness and the rule of law.
“The granting of clemency brings relief and affirms the principle that self-defense in the face of mortal danger should not be criminalized while terrorists and their advocates walk freely among us,” the statement added.
Northern CAN called on leaders at all levels to uphold justice, equity, and the rule of law while urging citizens to remain law-abiding and commit themselves to peaceful coexistence and national unity.
“As the nation celebrates Christmas, let us support our leaders, pray for the healing of our land, and work collectively towards a safer, more just, and united Nigeria,” the association stated.
