The Northern Renaissance Network (NRN), a prominent advocacy group championing integrity and transparency in Nigerian governance, has issued a scathing statement calling on Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, former Minister of Education, to clear her name amid serious allegations of accepting bribes. The claims, made by Dr. Sandra Duru in a viral video, allege that Ezekwesili was paid by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to defend her in a controversial sexual harassment case involving Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
In the video, Duru alleged that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan admitted during a phone conversation to offering financial incentives to Ezekwesili and others, whom she reportedly referred to as “useful idiots,” to support her claims against Akpabio. Duru further claimed that Akpoti-Uduaghan attempted to bribe her to join the campaign, an offer she says she rejected.
The NRN expressed deep dismay at the allegations, describing them as a “serious betrayal of public trust” and a “grievous dent” on Ezekwesili’s reputation as a longstanding advocate for good governance.
“These accusations strike at the heart of the values of honesty, accountability, and moral rectitude that Dr. Ezekwesili has publicly championed,” the group stated, noting that her entanglement in such a controversy risks undermining her legacy and Nigeria’s broader fight for ethical leadership.
The group emphasized the gravity of the claims, warning that they suggest a deliberate attempt to manipulate public discourse for personal or political gain. “These allegations, if left unaddressed, cast a dark shadow over Dr. Ezekwesili’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic and social development,” the NRN added.
In a direct appeal, the NRN urged Ezekwesili to provide a transparent and detailed response to the allegations, clarifying any involvement with Akpoti-Uduaghan and refuting the bribery claims. “Silence or evasion is unacceptable and will only deepen the erosion of her hard-earned integrity,” the statement read. The group stressed that Nigerians deserve full transparency from public figures who claim to represent their interests.
The NRN led by its spokesman, Agada Abuh Theo reaffirmed its commitment to upholding truth, justice, and accountability, calling on Ezekwesili to act swiftly to restore public confidence in her character. Failure to address the allegations comprehensively, the group warned, could irreparably damage her reputation and the broader struggle for ethical governance in Nigeria.
As of press time, Dr. Ezekwesili had not publicly responded to the allegations or the NRN’s statement. The controversy continues to spark debate across social and traditional media, with many Nigerians awaiting her response to the serious accusations.
