Over five hundred prisoners across the nation prisons have enrolled with National Open Universities of Nigeria (NOUN) to study various programme free of charge.
The Vice Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Abdalla Adamu revealed this yesterday, in Abuja when he led the President of Commonwealth of Learning, Prof. Aisha Kanwar who paid a courtesy call on the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Arc. Sonny Echono, According to the Vice Chancellor of NOUN, all Nigerian prisoners are entitled to free education under the National Open Universities to whatever level they chose to pursue their education.
Speaking earlier, the President of Commonwealth of Learning, Prof. Aisha Kanwar made a passionate appeal to the Permanent Secretary over the Nigeria non-payment of annual dues to Commonwealth of Learning.
She also requested that Nigeria should appoint a representative to the Commonwealth of Learning to replace Hajiya Katagum who have successfully served her tenure with the organization.
Responding, the Permanent Secretary, Arc. Sonny Echono, said the provision has been made under the 2019 budget and the Ministry will meet its obligation.
Arc. Sonny Echono also told the visiting President of the Commonwealth of Learning that the process is ongoing to the replacement to Hajiya Katagum at the Commonwealth.
