The National Population Commission, NPC, has announced the death of its Chairman, Dr. Aminu Yusuf, Talban Wushishi.
Dr. Yusuf passed away in Abuja on Friday, August 28, 2026, after a brief illness. He was aged 66.
This was contained in a statement issued by Mrs. Adelayo Serifat Olurode, Director of Public Affairs, NPC.
Dr. Yusuf was sworn in as the 8th substantive Chairman of the Commission by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on December 3, 2025. He provided visionary leadership and championed a Seven-Point Agenda aimed at repositioning the Commission.
Born on April 15, 1960, in Wushishi, Niger State, Dr. Yusuf had a distinguished record of public service spanning education, governance, grassroots politics, and community development.
He previously served as:
– Executive Chairman, Wushishi Local Government Area
– Member-elect, Niger State House of Assembly
– Board Member, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC
– Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Governor of Niger State
Until his appointment as NPC Chairman, he was National President of the Niger State College of Education Alumni Association, Minna, and Co-Chairman of the Senator Abubakar Sani Bello Skill Acquisition and Development Committee.
The Commission described him as “a dedicated patriot, an astute administrator, and a compassionate leader whose commitment to national development and the generation of reliable demographic data was unwavering.”
On behalf of the Federal Commissioners, Director-General, Management, and staff of the NPC, the Commission extended condolences to President Tinubu, the Federal Government, the Government and people of Niger State, and the Yusuf family.
“We pray Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings, grants him Al-Jannah Firdaus, and gives his family, friends, and associates the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” the statement said.
