NPFL Chairman Donates N2 Million to Family of Late Match Commissioner Mohammed Sani

The Chairman, Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, has donated the sum of two million naira to the family of the late match commissioner, Mohammed Sani. The donation, made on behalf of the NPFL board and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), serves as a gesture of support to the grieving family during this difficult period.

Mohammed Sani, a former footballer who later transitioned into football administration, tragically passed away on his way back to Maiduguri from Jos after officiating a league match involving Plateau United. Known for his dedication to football and commitment to fair officiating, his untimely death has left a significant void in the Nigerian football community.

To personally offer his condolences and pay his respects, Hon. Elegbeleye led a delegation to Maiduguri, where he met with the bereaved family. Accompanying him were Alhaji Babagana Kalli, Chairman of the Borno State Football Association and a board member of the NFF, and Alhaji Ibrahim Mustapha, Chairman of El-Kanemi Warriors Football Club.

During the visit, Hon. Elegbeleye commiserated with the family and described the late Sani as a humble and passionate football personality whose impact will not be forgotten.

“He was a good man, full of passion for the game of football,” Elegbeleye said. “

Alhaji Babagana Kalli also spoke during the condolence visit, noting that Sani’s legacy would be remembered for years to come.

The family of the late match commissioner expressed deep appreciation to Hon. Elegbeleye, the NPFL, and the NFF for their kind gesture and for traveling to Maiduguri to show their support.

Mohammed Sani’s journey through Nigerian football—first as a player and later as a respected official—earned him admiration across different spheres of the sport. His calm demeanor, fairness, and devotion to football administration made him a respected figure not only in Borno State but across the country.

His passing is not only a loss to his immediate family but to the wider football community, who will miss his experience, mentorship, and contribution to the beautiful game.
