NSUK Senate Approves Creation of Three New Faculties from Natural and Applied Sciences

The Senate of Nasarawa State University, Keffi has approved the unbundling of its Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences into three separate faculties as part of efforts to strengthen academic administration, promote specialization, and enhance the quality of teaching, research, and innovation.

The decision was reached during the university’s 140th Regular Meeting of Senate held on May 25, 2026.

According to an official memorandum signed by Barrister Ramatu A. Liman, Senior Deputy Registrar (Academic Affairs), on behalf of the Registrar, Senate approved the establishment of the Faculty of Computing, Faculty of Life Sciences, and Faculty of Physical Sciences.

The university said the restructuring is designed to align its academic programmes with global trends and best practices in higher education while providing a more focused framework for academic delivery, research activities, innovation, and capacity development.

As part of the reorganization, Senate also approved a recommendation by the Academic Planning and Curriculum Committee regarding the placement of the Department of Statistics and Data Analytics.

The department, which was initially proposed to be housed under the Faculty of Physical Sciences, has been reassigned to the Faculty of Computing.

The university explained that the decision reflects the increasing relevance of statistics and data analytics to emerging fields such as data science, artificial intelligence, computing, and other digital technologies.

The approved recommendations have been forwarded to the University’s Governing Council for consideration and final approval in line with established governance procedures.

University authorities described the development as a major step in NSUK’s ongoing drive towards academic excellence, innovation, and institutional growth.

The restructuring is expected to improve administrative efficiency, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, and strengthen the institution’s ability to respond to the evolving demands of science, technology, and research.

The university further noted that the creation of the new faculties demonstrates its commitment to building a dynamic academic structure capable of supporting emerging disciplines and producing graduates equipped with the knowledge and skills required in an increasingly technology-driven world.

The move is expected to position NSUK for greater competitiveness in higher education while expanding opportunities for research, innovation, and specialized learning across the sciences.
