The Director-General and Chief Executive of the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI), Kaduna, Dr. Aminu Ladan Sharehu has commended the executive Chairmen of the States Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) for their commitment in partnering with the Institute.
Dr. Aminu made the commendation during the opening ceremony of ‘Cycle Two, Second Cohort’ workshop for the training of science and mathematics teachers under the Strengthening of Mathematics and Science Education (SMASE) project.
He said the participating states of Bauchi, Delta, Taraba, Oyo and Zamfara have shown much interest in the training of science and mathematics teachers in their various states, hence, encouraged the participants from the states to cascade the knowledge acquired from the training to the local level and down to the students.
He said despite the end of the partnership of NTI and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the training of science and mathematics teachers would continue with the support of stakeholders. “NTI would continue to partner with SUBEBs on the sustenance of the project “, he said.
Dr. Aminu said the NTI SMASE Centre would one day become a regional centre for West Africa and acknowledged the contributions of the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), National
Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) and the Universal Basic Education Board, States Universal and Basic Education Boards, National Mathematical Centre, among others to the project.
The representative of the Supervising Minister of Education, who is a Deputy Director in the Department of Technical and Science Education, Mrs. Akaeze Chinwe said the purpose of the project is to improve on the quality of science and mathematics teachers and students in Nigeria.
Mrs. Chinwe said the project has recorded a lot of achievements. She said the Federal Ministry of Education is working to see that the training is included in the pre-service training. She commended the SUBEBs for sponsoring the training and appreciated the inputs of other stakeholders. She enjoined the participants to effectively impart the knowledge acquired to their students and she assured that the Ministry shall continue to support the NTI.
In his goodwill message, the representative of the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria, Mr Musa Badar congratulated the NTI for the milestone it has achieved in transforming the project, especially the unique cohort system.
The representative of the Delta State SUBEB Chairman, who is the Director of Academic Services at the Delta State SUBEB, Mrs Akpomiemie Beauty said it is their responsibility to see that the training succeeds.
In a related development, the representative of the Zamfara State SUBEB Chairman and a member of the Board, Barrister Suwaiba Barau said the state is ready to partner with the NTI in the training if it’s teachers. Barrister Suwaiba said the Zamfara SUBEB would develop a similar SMASE centre, equipped with up to date ICT facilities for the training of teachers in the State. She called on the participants to maximize the opportunities given to them.
The event was also attended by members of the NTI management team and other stakeholders in the training project.
