The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kaduna State Council has expressed its support for the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) initiative aimed at promoting voluntary tax compliance among journalists.
Comrade Abdulgafar Alabelewe, the union’s chairman, expressed this support in a goodwill message delivered during a training program organized by FIRS in Kaduna.
He acknowledged the critical role that taxation plays in financing national development and encouraged journalists to advocate for tax compliance.
The training is designed to enhance journalists’ understanding of taxation, enabling them to educate the public and counter misinformation.
The NUJ chairman appreciated the collaboration between FIRS and the media, pledging to support initiatives that promote fiscal responsibility and good governance.
Comrade Abdulgafar Alabelewe emphasized that journalists have a vital role in fostering tax compliance by informing citizens about its importance and benefits.
He stressed that members of the journalism profession can help dispel myths and misconceptions about taxation, contributing to a positive narrative around tax compliance. By highlighting the impact of tax revenue on national development, journalists can motivate citizens to adhere to tax laws.
The NUJ Kaduna Council’s endorsement of the FIRS tax compliance initiative demonstrates the significance of collaboration between the media and government agencies in encouraging fiscal responsibility and good governance.
Together, they can cultivate a culture of tax compliance and contribute to national development.
During the presentation, Mohammed Adamu emphasized the necessity for citizens and businesses to voluntarily comply with tax laws and regulations. He defined voluntary tax compliance as the willingness of taxpayers to accurately declare their incomes, maintain proper records, file returns, and pay taxes without the need for enforcement action by the tax authority.
Tax compliance is crucial for revenue collection, legal obligations, equity, and fairness, as it ensures that the government has the necessary funds to provide public services such as education and healthcare.
Key factors influencing tax compliance include perceived fairness, taxpayer education, service quality, transparency, and accountability. Ishaku Ankuma, Senior Manager of the Tax Kaduna Government Business Office, stated that the training aims to educate media practitioners on the significance of tax compliance and the advantages of voluntary tax payment.
Essential elements of tax compliance, according to him, include registration for a Tax Identification Number (TIN), proper record-keeping and documentation, accurate and timely filing of returns, withholding and remittance obligations, and prompt payment of taxes.
The FIRS media sensitization program on voluntary tax compliance underscores the importance of tax adherence in fostering societal stability and economic growth. By complying with tax regulations, individuals and businesses can avoid penalties and build trust within the tax system.
