The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Mallam Garba Mohammed has described the present insecurity situation in the country as worrisome and frightening.
He made the assertion during an interactive session
with journalists in Kaduna over the weekend, saying it is time for Nigerians to stop deceiving themselves and know that they’re faced with security challenges that have to be tackled if the country is to know peace again.
“Let me make myself clear, insecurity as insinuated is not limited to the North-East alone. Yes, the Boko Haram insurgents are having their activities in the North-East and you’re all aware that places like Gwoza and Burini Yadi have been captured with the insurgents hoisting their flag unchallenged.
“ When Gen. Aliyu Gusau (rtd) was named as the Minister of Defence some of us heaved a sigh of relief because of his past records in handling such situations; but today the situation is degenerating and alarming. It is high time as journalists to call the government to order and let them do what they’re supposed to do to return peace back to the country.
“Other security challenges that the Federal Government must urgently tackle are kidnapping and armed robbery. Recently, an uncle of a governor in one of the South-South states was found dead even after
all security efforts to secure him alive,” he said.
The NUJ National President assured all journalists that the National Executive Council of the Union is working round the clock to ensure better pay packet for journalists and that they are not abused in the process of doing their job.
