NYSC to introduce on-line call-up letters

he National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has disclosed plans to introduce an online registration for call-up letters for prospective corps members.

The Director General of the scheme, Brig. Gen Johnson Olawumi who disclosed this at a media chat with bureau chiefs and editors in Abuja yesterday, explained that the plan is targeted at easing-off the difficulties and risks corps members pass through during registrations.

He said the plans, which are currently awaiting government’s approval had already completed due process that includes certificate of no objection from Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC).

The Director-General also disclosed plans to develop a mobile application to ensure easy access to information on the scheme to be downloaded and installed on corps member’s phones to serve as tool for information, which will be unveiled during the next orientation camp at various centre across the country.

He noted that the body has also put some mercenaries in place to checkmate possible fraud and abuse that may arise from the process when the ongoing paperless completed.

However, Olawumi revealed that the scheme is into collaboration with the Office of the Senior Assistant to the President on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), min furtherance of the community development service effort, according to him, the programme focuses on achieving the millennium development goals for the country through sensitization, advocacy activities carried out by corps members.

He noted that the programme would enable corps members to create public awareness on government policies, programme such as MDG’s vision 20 -20 -20   as well as transformation agenda by functioning as development knowledge facilitators to all the 774 local government of the federation in order to reach out to 2,500,000 students and pupils.

The D-G, who could not hide his feelings, implored state and local government particularly in the area of provision of infrastructure and ensuring robust welfare for corps members and urged those who have not been rendering assistance to the scheme in their various states and local government area to brace-up and fulfill their obligation especially permanent orientation camps that is affecting the operation of the scheme.
