Prominent Nigerians like former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Former Chief General Staff (CGF) during Gen. Ibrahim Babangida’s regime, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe and an Afenifere chieftain, Pa Ayo Adebanjo were expected to attend the burial ceremony of the late Ohanaeze President-General, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, on November 1, 2024.
Chairman of the National Burial Planning Committee, Senator Ben Ndi Obi who made this known during a media update at Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) National Secretariat in Abuja over the weekend stated that many distinguished Nigerians have committed to participating in the ceremony.
He also mentioned that governors from the five South- Eastern States have reiterated their support for the event.
Sen. Obi represented by Professor Ike Ikechukwu, Chairman of the Media Sub-committee stated, “We have been engaging respected elder statesmen and women, as well as stakeholders, friends, and well-wishers both within and outside the country.”
“The South East governors, in their last meeting of yesterday, reaffirmed their resolve to give our leader the befitting and dignified exit rites he deserves.
“The funeral programme will commence on Wednesday, October 16 2024, with a Day of Tributes in Lagos, at Eko Hotel and Suites.
“This event will bring together leaders from all walks of life – political, business, religious, and cultural sectors – to reflect on Chief Iwuanyanwu’s immense contributions to the development of Nigeria and the Igbo people in particular.
“On Friday October 18th 2024 a Day of tributes will be held in Abuja, at the National Ecumenical Centre. This solemn event will allow friends, colleagues, and dignitaries in the federal capital territory to honour the life of a man whose vision and leadership were pivotal in shaping the course of national discourse.
“Following this, on Saturday, October 26th, 2024, Chief Iwuanyanwu’s body will arrive Enugu, en-route Owerri. There shall be a grand reception first, at the OHANEZE Headquarters and then Tributes at the Micheal Okpara Square before departure to Owerri. These events will showcase the rich Igbo culture and heritage that Chief Iwuanyanwu championed throughout his life.
