Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Monday called on President Bola Tinubu to resign, citing worsening economic conditions and what he described as a failure to fulfil key campaign promises.
Obi made the call in a post on social media, drawing a comparison with the resignation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, which he said reflected accountability in leadership.
The former governor argued that the economic challenges confronting Nigerians had deepened under the current administration, with rising living costs, unreliable electricity supply and worsening insecurity placing greater pressure on households and businesses.
According to him, Tinubu had pledged during the 2023 presidential campaign to improve electricity supply, tackle corruption and enhance citizens’ welfare.
Obi recalled that the President had also challenged Nigerians not to support his re-election bid if he failed to deliver on those promises.
He, however, maintained that conditions had deteriorated rather than improved, noting that businesses continued to grapple with erratic power supply while families faced increasing economic hardship.
“At present, these conditions have worsened. Electricity supply remains unreliable, insecurity has intensified in many areas, including kidnappings, and economic hardship has deepened rather than eased,” Obi stated.
The 2027 presidential hopeful further argued that similar setbacks were evident in other sectors, including infrastructure, transportation and anti-corruption efforts.
He said the nation was experiencing one of its most difficult periods and called on the President to take responsibility for what he termed “monumental failure in governance.”
Obi contended that a resignation by Tinubu would help strengthen accountability in public service and promote a political culture where leaders accept responsibility for unmet commitments.
He added that such a step would send a strong signal that public office is a trust bestowed by citizens and not an entitlement.
The former governor also justified his position by referencing past instances in which Tinubu had demanded accountability from leaders over governance failures.
The Presidency had yet to respond to Obi’s remarks as of the time of filing this report
