The Obidient Movement has criticised former Ali Modu Sheriff over his comments questioning the patriotism of Peter Obi, insisting that the former governor lacks the moral standing to make such allegations.
In a statement issued by its Media and Communications Directorate, the group accused Sheriff of sidestepping questions about the performance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during a recent appearance on Channels Television by shifting attention to Obi and issues surrounding the Nigerian Civil War.
The Movement argued that national discourse should focus on pressing concerns such as insecurity, economic hardship, inflation and the rising cost of living rather than what it described as attempts to distract the public with political rhetoric.
Defending Obi’s record, the group maintained that the former Anambra State governor has consistently demonstrated commitment to national unity through investments and business interests that cut across ethnic, religious and regional divides.
It cited Obi’s involvement in supporting businesses in different parts of the country, including Umza Rice during his tenure as chairman of Fidelity Bank, as evidence of his belief in an inclusive Nigeria.
The Movement also pointed to his proposals to leverage northern Nigeria’s agricultural potential to stimulate economic growth, create jobs and diversify the economy.
Rejecting claims that Obi is not committed to Nigeria’s unity, the Obidient Movement said he has consistently advocated dialogue, justice and inclusion as key strategies for addressing insecurity and national challenges.
The group also questioned Sheriff’s political record and urged Nigerians to concentrate on issues of governance, accountability and practical solutions to the country’s economic and security problems as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum.
