The Progressive Students Movement (PSM), Nigeria Chapter, has lauded the Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, for the successful rescue of 25 Ivorian nationals kidnapped in Ogun State.
The operation, which also led to the arrest of eight suspects, was described as a significant breakthrough in the fight against transnational crime.
In a statement issued on Saturday by PSM President, Comrade Okereafor Bestman, the group commended the IGP, the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja, led by Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Olaolu Adegbite, and the Commissioner of Police, INTERPOL Annex, Lagos, CP Bode Ojajuni, for their swift and professional response.
“This rescue operation underscores Nigeria’s zero-tolerance stance on crime,” Bestman said.
According to a police statement, the operation was triggered by a distress alert from Côte d’Ivoire’s NCB in Abidjan on April 23.
The alert revealed that one of the victims, Ladji Yoa Pierre, was lured to Nigeria under the false promise of securing travel documents to Belgium.
He was subsequently held hostage, with the kidnappers demanding a ransom of 2.5 million CFA (approximately ₦6.6 million).
On May 5, a crack team of special investigators stormed the kidnappers’ hideout at Osehi Hotel in Ado-Odo Ota, Ogun State, rescuing two victims and arresting two suspects.
A follow-up operation in Ejegun Itele, within the same area, led to the rescue of 23 additional victims, including Pierre, and the arrest of six more suspects. In total, 25 Ivorian nationals were freed, and eight suspects were taken into custody.
The PSM also praised CP Ojajuni and his team for their relentless efforts in combating transnational crime.
“In a show of gratitude, the NCB in Abidjan sent a formal letter dated May 6, 2025, commending the Nigeria Police for their effective action and expressing hope for deeper collaboration in tackling cross-border crime.
” All rescued victims have been handed over to the appropriate authorities.
“Pierre has reunited with his mother, Mrs. Kaussi Amenan Marianman, who travelled from Abidjan, while the remaining 24 victims have been transferred to the Nigerian Immigration Service for further assistance.
“The suspects remain in custody pending investigation and prosecution.”
The PSM urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies to aid in crime prevention.
“This operation positions Nigeria as a beacon of hope in the fight against crime,” the group added.
