OIC Calls for Comprehensive Solution to Rohingya Crisis
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ministerial Contact Group on the Rohingya Muslims, on Monday in New York called on the UN General Assembly to agree to a comprehensive solution to the Rohingya crisis.
At a meeting chaired by the OIC Secretary-General, Mr. Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the OIC said the solutions should also included the protection of the fundamental human rights of the Rohingyas.
The Secretary-General reaffirmed the OIC’s commitment to defending the rights of the Rohingyas and called for intensified international coordination to find a comprehensive and sustainable political solution to the crisis.
He commended the efforts of Gambia in leading the Organization’s response and of Bangladesh in hosting the refugees.
The Contact Group urged the Myanmar authorities to address the root causes of the crisis; restore the rights of the Rohingya, especially full citizenship; protection for Muslim communities and a voluntary, safe, dignified, and sustainable return of refugees and displaced persons to their homes in Rakhine State.
