Organisers of the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race have confirmed the payment of prize money to Nigerian winners of the 11th edition of the event, marking a significant milestone in a country where athletes have often complained about delays in receiving earnings from road races.
The prize money, sponsored by security expert and Oceanwaves Security Limited Chief Executive Officer, Peter Dunia, was paid following the successful completion of the race held in May.
Dunia had presented symbolic cheques to the winners immediately after the event, while the organisers have now officially confirmed that the payments have been completed following the conclusion of the mandatory international doping-control process.
A total of N3 million was awarded to the first-place finisher, N2 million to the runner-up, and N1 million to the third-place athlete in both the men’s and women’s categories.
The organisers said the announcement was aimed at recognising the achievements of Nigerian athletes and reaffirming the race’s commitment to rewarding local talent.
They noted that Nigerian participants are provided accommodation during the event and are given special recognition throughout the competition.
Although Nigerian runners are yet to consistently compete at the highest international level, the organisers highlighted encouraging progress in this year’s race.
