The Odua People’s Assembly has defended the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, describing recent criticism by retired Major General Ishola Williams as irresponsible and counterproductive.

The group said Williams’ call for Ribadu’s removal lacked factual basis and could undermine ongoing efforts to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges.

Williams had, during an interview on Channels Television on March 15, 2026, called for a major overhaul of the country’s security leadership, including the dismissal of the NSA.

Reacting in a statement on Tuesday, OPA Chairman, Richard Olatunji Kayode, said the retired general’s remarks were driven by emotion rather than evidence, warning that such comments risk promoting a culture of “permanent pessimism.”

According to him, unsubstantiated criticisms could weaken public confidence in security institutions and dampen the morale of personnel working to secure the country.

Kayode said, “His assertions lack factual support and are driven more by emotional manipulation than by evidence-based reasoning. Such rhetoric contributes to a culture of ‘permanent pessimism’ that undermines the morale of our security forces and the integrity of our national institutions.

“Irresponsible criticism, as exemplified by Williams’ comments, is characterised by a lack of evidence and destructive intent. Rather than engaging in reasoned discourse, he resorts to unsubstantiated accusations and ridicule.”

The group noted that such remarks distract from the need for constructive dialogue and collaborative solutions to Nigeria’s security challenges.

Kayode stressed that criticism should provide actionable alternatives rather than merely identifying faults, adding that Williams’ call failed to offer practical solutions.

“It perpetuates a cycle of blame without contributing to meaningful discourse on how to enhance our national security framework,” he added.

The OPA also highlighted Ribadu’s initiatives, including the National Forest Guard programme, as evidence of his commitment to innovative security strategies.

It further cited his record as former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, noting his anti-corruption strides.

Kayode said Ribadu’s performance under President Bola Tinubu had shown effectiveness in tackling banditry and terrorism through improved coordination of security forces.

He urged Nigerians, particularly influential figures, to engage in responsible and constructive discourse on national security.

The group also called on Williams to reconsider his position and contribute meaningfully to strengthening the country’s security framework.

“We must foster trust, collaboration and constructive criticism to support our security forces,” Kayode said.
