The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, over the weekend paid a visit to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Prisons, in a move that has generated widespread public interest and political reactions.
Governor Otti, who arrived in Sokoto was received by senior Sokoto State government officials before proceeding to the correctional facility where Kanu is being held.
Though details of the closed-door discussions were not disclosed, sources confirmed that the visit was conducted under strict security protocol.
The Abia governor’s visit marks one of the most high-profile engagements with Kanu since his transfer to Sokoto, and analysts say it underscores Otti’s ongoing advocacy for dialogue, legal due process, and the humanitarian treatment of detainees.
Officials in Sokoto described the meeting as “cordial,” noting that the cooperation between both state governments facilitated the governor’s access. Governor Otti is expected to brief the media on the purpose and outcome of the visit upon his return to Abia.
The development has sparked renewed public conversation around Kanu’s detention, the legal proceedings surrounding his case, and the broader implications for national unity, justice, and political reconciliation.
