The announcement of the extension of the three months warning strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has triggered negative reactions from both parents and students residing in Kaduna.
A check in Kaduna revealed that most of the students and parents who spoke to our correspondent see the extension of the strike as needless, therefore, called on the Federal Government and ASUU to go back to the dialogue table and interface for the students to return back to classrooms
Alhaji Abba Magaji, a parent and a businessman in Malali, Kaduna North Local Government Area of the State, lamented that the strike is coming amidst increase in the price of foodstuff, high cost of petrol and general insecurity bedevilling the peace, stability of the state and the country in general.
He said he doesn’t want his children to spend another three months at home because of the strike.
An educationist, Emmanuel Thomas said the strike will have devastating implications on the education sector in the country.
According to him, not every parent is buoyant enough to send his or her wards abroad to study or to a private university, meaning children of the less privileged are the ones suffering
A student, Eugene said the ASUU strike has caused her one year of her academic life in the tertiary institution.
Giving credence to this, a 200-level student of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Temiloluwa Oyelola regretted being in a system that caused her one year of her academic life.
According to her, the strike is horrible, saying, I should have been preparing for my examination but here I am hoping that the strike will be called off”.
Halima Dauda, a 100-level student of Bayero University, Kano (BUK) said the strike is affecting her mental health,saying strike generally is the worst thing that has ever happened in her life.
