Peoples Daily reporter heads NUJ FCT constitution review committee

In line with the directive of the Constitutional Review Committee of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) National Secretariat, the NUJ FCT Council  has set up a five-member committee to liaise with chapel leadership and major stakeholders to collate views and submission of members.

The members of the committee include: Lateef Ibrahim (Peoples Daily), Tony Akowe (Correspondents’), Ekwi Ajide (Correspondents’), Bassey Ikpang (NTA) and David Ngobua (Daily Trust).

This was contained in a statement yesterday by the Secretary of Council, Mr Ochiaka Ugwu in Abuja.

The committee among other things will, according to the statement, request colleagues to submit memoranda that concerns provisions and sections they consider should be reviewed to meet the aspirations of members.

The Chairman of the Abuja Council of NUJ, Comrade Emmanuel Ogbeche said, “The Constitution was last amended in 2011 and NUJ FCT Council envisages that the constitution, being a living document that is expected to guide the affairs of the union requires alteration or amendments from time to time as a result of operations of its various aspects and new experiences and new thinking on some provisions.

“It is as a result of this prevailing realty that the NUJ FCT Council reached a resolution at the congress of March 2021 to formally write the National Secretariat of the union to embark on a constitutional review to live up with members’ yearning and also given the fact that NUJ constitution specifically provides for the mode of altering its provisions in Article 12”, he said.

Ogbeche advised the committee to strive to reach out to all members and get their inputs to enrich the amendment.

The committee, which has Lateef Ibrahim as Chairman and Tony Akowe as Secretary, will have only one week to complete the assignment.

Recall that the National Secretariat of NUJ had inaugurated a Constitutional Review Committee to amend the constitution to be in agreement with present realities.
