Peter Obi defends Catholic Bishops, urges Tinubu govt to accept criticism

Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has defended the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) over its recent comments on the country’s economic and security situation, urging the Federal Government to embrace constructive criticism instead of attacking dissenting voices.
In a statement posted on his official social media page, Obi said the Catholic Church has consistently served as the conscience of the nation, maintaining an independent voice on national issues across both military and democratic administrations rather than acting as a political opposition.
He noted that other major religious bodies, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) and the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN), have also repeatedly expressed concern over insecurity, inflation, unemployment and rising poverty because of the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians.
According to Obi, political leaders should welcome honest feedback and use it to improve governance rather than criticize those drawing attention to the country’s challenges.
Reflecting on his time as governor of Anambra State, he said constructive advice from religious and traditional leaders contributed to the achievements of his administration, particularly in education and healthcare.
Obi also condemned criticisms directed at Cardinal John Onaiyekan following the bishops’ remarks, arguing that respected religious leaders should not be vilified for speaking on issues affecting the nation.
He further accused political leaders of using religion and ethnicity to distract from pressing national problems, insisting that insecurity, inflation, unemployment and economic hardship affect Nigerians regardless of faith or ethnic background.
Obi maintained that instead of responding with personal attacks, the government should focus on addressing the concerns raised by religious leaders and reassuring citizens through policies that improve their welfare.
