The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said he would strengthen opposition parties and encourage their participation in governance if elected president, arguing that no political party has a monopoly on good ideas.
Obi made the remarks during an interview with media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo, which aired during the weekend.
The former Anambra State governor said Nigeria’s political leaders should focus on bringing together different perspectives and ideas to address the country’s challenges rather than treating politics as a winner-takes-all contest.
Responding to a question on whether President Bola Tinubu believes only his party can rescue the country, Obi maintained that effective governance thrives on broad consultation and collaboration.
“If I’m the president of this country, I will do everything possible to make opposition parties strong and participatory in governance,” he said.
According to Obi, involving opposition parties in policy discussions would lead to better decisions and improved outcomes for Nigerians.
“The more you bring everybody together, the more we discuss it, the more we consult, the better result,” he added.
Obi has been a prominent figure in opposition politics since joining the coalition formed under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in July 2025.
He formally became a member of the coalition platform on December 31, 2025, as opposition parties intensified efforts ahead of the 2027 general election.
