The Benue State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old suspected arms supplier allegedly linked to bandit groups in Guma Local Government Area of the state.
The suspect, identified as Joro Jakata, was apprehended following a proactive operation carried out by the tactical team of the Guma Divisional Police Headquarters on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
The newly appointed Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, DSP Peter Aondongu, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Makurdi on Friday.
According to Aondongu, the police operatives were conducting a stop-and-search operation when they intercepted two individuals riding on a motorcycle.
He said that upon sighting the police team, one of the occupants alighted from the motorcycle and fled into a nearby bush, while the other suspect, identified as Joro Jakata, was arrested.
A search conducted on the suspect, who is from Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, led to the recovery of 115 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition concealed in his possession.
The Police spokesperson stated that the suspect is currently in custody, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Makurdi, for further investigation.
He added that efforts have been intensified to apprehend the fleeing accomplice and uncover the source, intended destination, and circumstances surrounding the movement of the ammunition.
Aondongu said the Commissioner of Police in Benue State, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu, commended the vigilance, professionalism, and alertness of the officers involved in the operation, which led to the recovery.
He quoted the Commissioner as reaffirming the command’s commitment to combating the proliferation of illegal arms and ammunition, as well as dismantling criminal networks threatening the peace and security of Benue State.
The PPRO further stated that the Police Commissioner urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, movements, or activities to the nearest police formation.
