The Police Service Commission has approved the promotion of AIG Fayoade Adegoke Mustapha to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police.
The decision was taken on Friday, February 20, 2026, after his strong showing in the commission’s written examination and oral interview.
The commission’s spokesperson, Torty Njoku Kalu, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.
Mustapha, who joined the Nigeria Police in 1992, brings more than three decades of service to his new role.
Until his promotion, he served as Assistant Inspector General in charge of Zone 2 Command, Lagos, where he earned commendation for community policing and strategic operations.
His tenure saw the dismantling of the notorious “Billionaires” kidnapping gang in Lagos.
The new DIG has received several local and international awards, including the 2024 Crime Buster of the Year for West and Central Africa.
Others include multiple Best Police Station in Africa awards in Nairobi, Best Divisional Police Officer in West Africa in Johannesburg and Dubai, as well as international security honours from institutions in Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
The chairman of the commission, Hashimu Salihu Argungu, urged Mustapha to see the promotion as a call to higher responsibility.
Argungu said the commission was confident that the officer’s experience in technology-driven policing and stakeholder engagement would boost national security.
The Nigeria Police Force is overseen by the Police Service Commission, which is responsible for appointments, promotions and discipline within the Force, except for the Inspector-General.
