The Police yesterday announced the release of one of the remaining 219 girls abducted by Boko Haram insurgents in a Secondary School in Chibok, Borno state.
Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, told a news conference at the National Information Centre routine briefing in Abuja, that the girl was dropped off by the insurgents along Mubi Road in Borno State at about 5pm on Wednesday.
The released girl, Miss Susanna Ishaya, was however found with 4 month’s pregnancy. She allegedly wandered in the bush for two days before she was rescued by villagers.
The development was also confirmed by Chairman of Chibok Community in Abuja, Mr. Hosea Tsambido Abana yesterday, through a telephone interview with journalists in Yola, stressing that the insurgents were merciless to the point of impregnating the innocent girl against her wish.
“Susanna is actually one of our daughters abducted from Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok. She was ferried in a Volkswagen golf and thrown into the bush about two days ago and she wandered into the village of Kwarihi, near Mubi, where her abductors dumped her and she was later taken to Yola; the girl is four months pregnant”,
“When she was asked, she gave her name as Susanna Ishaya but right now we are not sure if it is her real name until she is really treated because the people that saw her said she is both mentally and physically sick and has been taken to the hospital.
“We believe that she was probably abandoned by Boko Haram because of her health”, he disclosed.
He (Abana) explained that the abandoned girl was reported to be suffering from trauma and critically ill and was currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
“Evidently, the girl was subjected to serious abuse. There are bruises on her body while she is suffering from psychological trauma”, Abana stated.
He called on federal government to step up efforts toward freeing the girls and re uniting them with their families, stressing the need to bring the perpetrators to face justice.
Sources at the Police Clinic, in Yola, confirmed that Susanna was on admission at the clinic, where she received treatment but was taken to the Police headquarters in the morning.
However, a source said the girl might have been referred to a bigger hospital for advanced medical attention.
Another source, who pleaded anonymity, said because of Susan’s deteriorated health condition, she might be transferred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yola.” The young girl has suffered a lot and she needed proper medical attention, I believed the police will send her to FMC, Yola or even fly her out of the country for proper medical attention” he said.
Meanwhile, the government says it has also commenced a process of de-radicalizing the 135 Boko Haram members who surrendered their weapons within the last two weeks.
The Coordinator of the National Information Center, Mr. Mike Omeri said the process is to re-integrate them into the society.
