POLICE HONOUR ON THE LINE: I-G Disu Warns Officers Against Misconduct, Vows Tough Accountability

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has issued a strong warning to personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, urging them to shun indiscipline and misconduct that could tarnish the integrity of the police uniform.

Disu gave the charge on Tuesday in Abuja during the 2026 National Police Day celebration themed “Community Partnership: Building Trust.”

“We must rise above indiscipline, misconduct and every action that diminishes the honour of our uniform,” he said.

The police chief described the occasion as a defining moment for the force, stressing that it was not only a time to honour sacrifices but also an opportunity for honest reflection and renewed commitment to the future of policing in Nigeria.

Addressing officers and men nationwide, Disu acknowledged the risks and pressures associated with policing, commending their dedication and courage. However, he emphasised the need for accountability and reform.

“Rank will not shield wrongdoing, the uniform will never excuse abuse, and authority will not override the rule of law,” he stated.

He assured that under his leadership, accountability would be firm, fair and without exception, while officers who uphold professionalism would receive full support.

Disu also pledged to prioritise improved welfare, enhanced capacity building and better equipment for personnel, noting that a respected police institution must be built on officers who are properly trained, supported and treated with dignity.

Reaching out to Nigerians, the I-G acknowledged the trust deficit between the public and the police, promising deliberate efforts to bridge the gap.

“You will see a police force that is more accountable, more professional, more disciplined and more humane — one that protects rather than intimidates, partners rather than provokes, and earns respect instead of fear,” he said.
