The Ekiti State Police Command has dismissed reports that human rights activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was kidnapped in Ado-Ekiti.
The police said Sowore was rescued by operatives after an altercation with some individuals at a restaurant in the Dalimore area of the state capital.
The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.
Abutu said preliminary information indicated that Sowore had a confrontation with some individuals at the restaurant, prompting a distress call to the police.
He said operatives immediately mobilised to the scene and rescued the activist.
“He, however, sustained a minor injury and is currently receiving medical attention at the Police Hospital, Ado-Ekiti,” Abutu stated.
The police spokesman said the Commissioner of Police, Falade Adegoroye Michael, had ordered a discreet investigation into the incident.
According to him, the investigation will establish the circumstances surrounding the altercation, identify those involved and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
The Command urged members of the public to remain calm and disregard reports suggesting that Sowore was kidnapped.
It also cautioned against circulating unverified information capable of creating unnecessary panic and tension.
Sowore is in Ekiti State to participate in the 2026 Ikogosi 17.5-kilometre marathon scheduled for Saturday, October 31.
The race is expected to run between Ilawe-Ekiti in Ekiti South-West Local Government Area and Ikogosi in Ekiti West Local Government Area.
The activist also participated in the 2025 edition of the marathon.
